New Website Provides Resources for Cybercrime Victims

The VictimVoice website provides resources for cybercrime victims

On April 3, 2014, NW3C joined with SymantecTM to launch the VOICE website (www.victimvoice.org). VOICE stands for Victims of Internet Crimes Empowered. This new website serves as a comprehensive, trustworthy resource for both victims of Internet-related crimes and for all people who spend time online. It provides information for victims about steps they should take to protect themselves and their resources in the aftermath of a cybercrime and it offers ways to prevent these crimes in the first place.

According to the 2013 Norton Report, 41 percent of online adults became victims of attacks such as malware, viruses, hacking and scams in 20131. In order to avoid becoming a victim, consumers need to be aware of the great variety of ways criminals will try to reach them online. The VOICE website arms people with this information. The “Get Educated” section of the website features two videos that inform viewers about cybercrimes. The “Prevention” section includes important steps to take to avoid becoming a victim, ways to identify a scam and helpful tips. A helpful FAQ section addresses various commonly asked questions related to cybercrime.

For those who have already been victimized, the website features step-by-step guides, organized around specific scams, that will help minimize the effects of the crime and speed recovery. Contact information for organizations that offer immediate help and support is also included. In addition, the site gives a way for victims to report details about the crime directly to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

“Every day more than a million people fall victim to cybercrime but rarely report the crimes because many believe nothing can be done,” said Bill Wright, Director of Cybersecurity Partnerships, Symantec. “While security software serves as the first layer of defense, the VOICE site offers both educational tools for cybercrime prevention along with solutions to help guide victims through the recovery process.”

“To make their voices heard, cybercrime victims first need to have access to the right information,” said Glen Gainer, NW3C Chairman. “We are thrilled that our partnership with Symantec has enabled us to provide this vital, free online resource for consumers.”
