Cyber Investigation 201 - Basic On-Line Technical Skills (BOTS)

This 4 1/2 day course is designed for the officer who is new to on-line investigations or for officers whose agencies are setting up an online investigation unit. The course will teach the basic technical skills and considerations involved in setting up an under-cover account and the importance of choosing an ISP (Internet Service Provider). The student will also learn what types of information may be retained by ISPs and what levels of legal documentation is required to obtain the information. The student will learn how to conduct and document real-time chats, instant messaging, as well as tracing the communication and e-mail back to the source computer. Additionally, the student will learn how to trace and document on-line evidence found in newsgroups, web-sties and peer to peer networking.

The online component must be taken and each student must test out of it prior to being confirmed in the course.
