Internet Fraud Complaint Center Changes Name to Internet Crime Complaint Center
December 23, 2003 – In an effort to more accurately reflect the wide-ranging nature of on-line complaints being reported, the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) and FBI recently announced that the Internet Fraud Complaint Center will now be called the Internet Crime Complaint Center, or “IC3.”

How to Identify and Prevent Frauds Against Older People
June 12, 2003 – NW3C (National White Collar Crime Center), in partnership with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA), will host two, one and one-half day training sessions for law enforcement, adult protection personnel, and victim services advocates on “Identifying and Preventing Frauds Against Older People” at the University of Indianapolis, Schwitzer Student Center.

April 22, 2003 – The Coalition for the Prevention of Economic Crime (CPEC) today announced that Walter Gary Sharp Sr., noted author and director of Global and Functional Affairs within the Bureau of Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, has been named a keynote speaker at the seventh annual Economic Crime Summit coming to Washington, D.C.’s Hyatt Regency Crystal City on May 4-7, 2003.

NW3C Announces Study on Internet Fraud Preparedness Conducted by Dr. Ronald G. Burns
April 15,2003 - A study of 2,344 law enforcement agencies, designed to gauge law enforcement's preparedness and involvement in preventing and investigating Internet fraud, shows U.S. law enforcement officers do not believe they have the necessary resources or staff to adequately investigate Internet fraud.

Internet Fraud Complaint Center Referred More Than 48,000 Fraud Complaints to Law Enforcement in 2002
April 9, 2003 - The Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) released its annual Internet Fraud Report today showing that, on behalf of victims, IFCC referred 48,252 fraud complaints to federal, state and/or local law enforcement authorities last year. This referral rate is triple the number of referrals (16,775) in 2001. The report also states that the total dollar loss from all referred fraud cases was $54 million, up from $17 million in 2001.

In fact, there is no reconcilable statistic available that can actually put a dollar figure on what it costs Americans in financial and emotional distress each year. "Monetary loss is just one side of identity theft. Victims suffer long-term physical and emotional strain as they seek to restore normality to their lives and to the lives of their families," said Richard Johnston, Director of NW3C. February 6, 2003 - Reports have surfaced concerning UNSOLICITED e-mail campaigns requesting donations to various alleged charitable causes in connection with the Columbia Space Shuttle tragedy. These e-mails may contain links to sites collecting credit card information.
