HOLIDAY SCAMS ABOUND
RICHMOND, VA The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received over 5,400 complaints since Black Friday. Those complaints run the gambit; from charity phishing scams to malware-infected holiday e-cards to people who unwittingly downloaded infected files while searching for lyrics for their favorite Christmas carol.
RHODE ISLAND LAW ENFORCEMENT WORK TOGETHER TO FIGHT CYBER CRIME
LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND The number of Internet crimes is on the rise in Rhode Island. The number of Internet crime complaints rose by nearly 30% between 2007 and 2008; and it is expected that it will increase by over 50% from 2008 to 2009. The Rhode Island State Police and local law enforcement have developed a team approach to help combat cyber crimes throughout the state. As part of that approach, the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) will present critical training to Rhode Island police officers to help law enforcement recognize electronic evidence and respond to an electronic crime scene.
CYBER THIEVES MAKING A BUNDLE POSING AS "FRIENDS"
RICHMOND, VA Impersonating "friends" on social networking sites such as Facebook has become an increasingly profitable business for Internet crooks. Thieves are hijacking accounts and using them to send emotional pleas for help like "I lost my wallet in London and desperately need money to get home!" In many cases, the recipients wind up wiring hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars to the thieves.

COMPLAINTS OF ONLINE CRIME HIT RECORD HIGH
RICHMOND, VA The 2008 Annual Report released today by the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reports that complaints of online crime hit a record high in 2008. IC3 received a
total of 275,284 complaints, a 33.1% increase over the previous year. The total dollar loss linked to online fraud was $265 million, about $25 million more than in 2007. The average
individual loss amounted to $931.

RICHMOND, VA As job opportunities become increasingly difficult to find, work-at-home scams are spreading like viruses on the Internet. In the past three months alone,
the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received nearly 1000 complaints nationwide involving work-at-home scams. Victims, many of them desperate to provide for their families, are "hired" to process payments, transfer funds, or reship products.
CYBER THIEVES ARE PINCHING PENNIES
RICHMOND, VA Mysterious charges ranging from 21 cents to 48 cents are showing up on credit and debit card statements around the country. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), nearly 300 consumers in 46 states have been affected and the number could go even higher.

RICHMOND, VA Scores of consumers are opening their monthly checking account statements to find that their accounts have been debited electronically without their consent. These charges come in the form of electronic checks and range from $10.00 to $40.00. So far, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received more than 400 complaints from unsuspecting consumers nationwide. But, the number could go much, much higher.
